Nikki Gabriel is an Australian knitwear designer living and working out of Napier New Zealand to me she epitomizes all that is beautiful in sustainable and ethical design. Her design is made with a recycled blend of locally sourced wool silk alpaca and cashmere. She outsources to local home based knitters as well.
To “Democratize” her lovely and delightful pieces she creates CONSTRUCTION patterns for novice knitters to make simple conceptual fashion pieces themselves.
CONSTRUCTION is a series of knitting patterns designed to be made in stages by knitting shapes. Each shape is simple to knit and like a building block system, you can begin with a one-ball of wool construction; your first block. Knit one ball creating a garment; then add another knitted shape with two balls of wool building on the first garment. Modular design through knitting. Genius.
I imagine Nikki Gabriel is lovely and delightful too. Images courtesy of the Nikki Gabriel website and blog, which has the best logo ever (above).
